Can complementary & alternative medicine play a role in GI treatment?

A recent study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology examines the growing role complementary and alternative medicine is playing in the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions.

The study utilized the 2012 National Health Interview Survey to estimate the use of CAM modalities in U.S. adults. Here are six things to know about the study’s findings.

•    13,505 respondents with a GI condition within the past year (42 percent) used CAM within that year
•    3 percent of the respondents with a GI condition used at least on CAM modality to address that condition
•    The top three CAM modalities were herbs and supplements, mind-body therapies and manipulative therapies
•    Of those using CAM, 47 percent utilized three of more types.
•    80 percent of those using CAM found it to be helpful in addressing their GI condition
•    Respondents using CAM told their physicians 70 percent of the time
