Baylor University taps Dr. Hashem El-Serag to be chief of medicine: 4 things to know

Waco, Texas-based Baylor University selected Hashem El-Serag, MD, to be the next chair of its college of medicine.

Here’s what you should know.

1. Dr. El-Serag is a professor of gastroenterology and hepatology at Baylor. He was the chief of the GI and hepatology department for the last nine years.

2. During his current tenure, Dr. El-Serag recruited more than 30 new faculty members to the department and established several multidisciplinary clinical and research programs.

3. He will begin his tenure as chief on Jan. 1, 2017. He will continue as the director of the Texas Medical Center’s Digestive Disease Center and will continue his practice.

4. Dr. El-Serag is a noted researcher. He has more than 400 bylines to his name and is the editor in chief for Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatology and the American Gastroenterological Association Journal. Thomas Reuter named him one of the world’s most influential scientific minds in clinical medicine.
