ASC Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Bergein Overholt of Gastrointestinal Associates

Bergein Overholt, MD, is a physician with Gastrointestinal Associates in Knoxville, Tenn., a group of 13 physicians and nearly 100 staff. He has led his practice in the development and use of BARRx treatment for Barrett's Esophagus, a condition that affects tissue lining the esophagus. The practice also offers narrow band imaging, hemorrhoid banding and other innovative procedures.

An accomplished gastroenterologist, Dr. Overholt considers his patients' needs and opinions one of the most important parts of his practice. In a statement on the Gastrointestinal Associates website, he said, "My advice to a new physician is to always listen carefully to your patients. You will learn much more than just about their symptoms. You will learn about people."

Dr. Overholt served as president of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers. He is also a founding member and past president of the Tennessee Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

From 1981-1983, Dr. Overholt served as the chief of staff at St. Mary's Medical Center. He also worked as the medical director of the Laser Department of the Thomas Cancer Survival Center.

Dr. Overholt earned his MD at the University of Tennessee Medical School and completed his internship, residency and two-year fellowship at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. He trained for two years in gastroenterology at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and has published numerous articles, written several book chapters and recently co-edited the book Office Endoscopy.

Dr. Overholt is a dedicated Knoxville resident, having lived in the city since he was a just over a year old. "I always knew I wanted to be here," he said in an interview with the Knoxville News Sentinel. "The quality of life here is a major draw." An active member of his community for many years, Dr. Overholt served on the Knoxville City School Board from 1972-1987 and founded the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce's B.E.S.T educational program.
