Anti-inflammatory diet benefits IBD patients in remission: 4 study facts

Research, presented at the 2018 Canadian Digestive Disease Week, Feb. 9 to Feb. 12 in Toronto, Canada, found patients with ulcerative colitis in remission who ate anti-inflammatory foods experienced colon inflammation preventing changes in microbial pathways, Gastroenterology and Endoscopy News reported.

Researchers had 53 patients with ulcerative colitis in remission follow an anti-inflammatory diet or Canada's Food Guide, which is a general guide for healthy eating.

Here are four takeaways:

1. The anti-inflammatory diet increased fiber, probiotics, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids intake, and decreased red and processed meats, alcohol and sugar intake

2. Five patients on the anti-inflammatory diet relapsed during the study, while eight on the general diet relapsed.

3. The patients who followed the standard diet experienced a significant increase in fecal calprotectin, an indicator of colon inflammation, while the anti-inflammatory diet group did not experience an increase.

4. The researchers concluded an anti-inflammatory diet could prevent subclinical inflammation of the colon.
