American College of Gastroenterology Releases New Guidelines for Achalasia Management

New guidelines for the diagnosis and management of achalasia will appear in the August issue of The American Journal of Gastroenterology.

Achalasia, a motor disorder of the esophagus, is an incurable disease that can lead to regurgitation of bland undigested food or saliva. New guidelines stress the important of early diagnosis and address the use of high-resolution esophageal manometry to diagnosis the disorder.

All new guidelines are based on evidence-quality evaluations in patients and a comprehensive review of evidence and published data.
