As he opened the 2018 AMA Annual Meeting, June 9 to June 13 in Chicago, American Medical Association President David O. Barbe, MD, recognized Larry Kosinski, MD, and several others for their efforts to “move medicine.”

Here’s what you should know:

1. Dr. Barbe recognized Elgin-based Illinois Gastroenterology Group’s Dr. Kosinski for his SonarMD system.

2. The SonarMD system helps physicians combat excessive spending related to hospitalizations by tracking patient conditions and reaching out to patients if their symptoms begin to worsen.

3. Since Dr. Kosinski implemented the system, hospitalizations and spending are both way down, while patient satisfaction is up.

4. Dr. Barbe also recognized U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams, MD, as well as medical students Pratistha Koirala and Ruth Howe.
