AGA raises nearly $160K for GI inequity research

The American Gastroenterological Association's research arm raised $159,137 on AGA Giving Day, which was Dec. 3.

All donations made to the AGA Research Foundation will go toward five AGA Pilot Research Awards earmarked for research on health disparities in GI.

AGA Giving Day was launched as part of the AGA Equity Project, an ongoing effort to eradicate disparities and achieve equity in digestive diseases.

The AGA's fundraising aims to address issues including:

  • Race and socioeconomic factors related to poor outcomes for patients with inflammatory bowel disease
  • The higher incidence of colorectal cancer among African Americans than any other racial group in the U.S.
  • The high prevalence and severity of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease among Hispanics

"Thanks to our generous donors, we can support state-of-the-art research that aligns with the realities of the current multicultural patient population and disease states to achieve health equity for all," the AGA said.
