AGA: Millions could lose coverage under Graham-Cassidy — 4 insights

The American Gastroenterological Association released a statement against the healthcare bill proposed by Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

Here's what you should know:

1. The AGA is concerned the bill would jeopardize insurance coverage for millions of Americans, including patients with preexisting conditions. The organization also views the lifetime expenditure caps as problematic.

2. In a statement, the organization said, "AGA urges Congress to return to regular order and work in a bipartisan manner to stabilize the individual insurance market and make improvements to health care legislation to ensure that patients have access to and coverage of quality health care."

3. Additionally, the AGA has several key provisions it would like to see included in a healthcare replacement bill. Those are:

  • Ensuring access to specialty care
  • Ensuring access to evidence-based preventive screenings without cost sharing
  • Ensuring insurers cannot discriminate against patients with preexisting conditions
  • Ensuring patients cannot be discriminated against because of gender
  • Ensuring parents can keep their children on their plans until the child turns 26 years old
  • Banning annual and lifetime caps

4. The AGA encourages all members to contact their elected officials and let them know their thoughts on the bill.
