A recent study published in The Lancet found that the addition of a deadline to a mailed invitation for fecal immunochemical testing for colorectal cancer screening improved return rates.
Here are three things to know from the study:
1. Across eight study groups, the highest test return rate was seen in those with a two-week deadline without a problem-solving planning tool, an added sheet of paper that asked participants to identify concerns that kept them from completing and returning the FIT kit.
2. Of tests with a two-week deadline, 68% of usable FIT fits were returned within three months, compared with 66% in the control group, which had no deadline for return and no planning tool.
3. The lowest return rate, 63.2%, was observed when the planning tool was given without a deadline.
