9 GI leaders featured in August

Becker's ASC Review featured the following GI leaders this month:

1. Fasiha Kanwal, MD, is chief of gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In addition to her role as chief of gastroenterology, Dr. Kanwal is a professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and serves as editor-in-chief of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

2. David E. Cohen, MD, PhD, serves as chief of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at the Weill Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. Dr. Cohen previously served as the director of hepatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and director of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.

3. James Lin, MD, is chief of the division of gastroenterology at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif. Dr. Lin also is an assistant clinical professor for City of Hope's Department of Medicine and serves as the hospital's director of endoscopy.

4. Michael Lucey, MD, is chief of the division of gastroenterology at the Madison-based University of Wisconsin's department of medicine. Dr. Lucey is also the co-medical director of the Digestive Health Center at UW Hospital and Clinics. He leads the UW liver transplant program as its medical director.

5. David Chua, MD, is director of Chicago-based South Loop Endoscopy and Wellness Center. Dr. Chua's clinical interests include quality improvement in medical care and preventive health. He has over 20 years of experience, and earned his medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology in the Philippines.

6. Kimberly A. Brown, MD, is chief of gastroenterology at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. Dr. Brown has served in the role since 2003. Before becoming chief of gastroenterology, Dr. Brown was the medical director of liver transplantation and the gastroenterology fellowship director.

7. Vanessa M. Shami, MD, is director of endoscopic ultrasound in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Medical Center. Dr. Shami is also a professor of medicine at UVA. Her clinical practice focuses on GI oncology, Barrett's ablation and upper and lower endoscopic mucosal resection.

8. Adam J. Goodman, MD, is section chief of gastroenterology at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in New York City. He created the endoscopic ultrasound program at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in 2017, which treats more than 100 patients annually. Dr. Goodman also performs endoscopic ultrasound to diagnose and treat GI diseases. His clinical experience includes diagnosing liver and pancreatic cancer and treating general gastrointestinal concerns.

9. Frank Friedenberg, MD, is chief of gastroenterology at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and a professor of medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. His clinical interests include treating inflammatory bowel disease, C. difficile colitis and functional dyspepsia.
