8 things to know about American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy's new president Dr. Karen Woods

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy appointed Houston Methodist Gastroenterology Associates' Karen Woods, MD, as its next president.

Here's eight things to know about Dr. Woods.

1. Dr. Woods assumed the role at the conclusion of Digestive Disease Week, May 6 through May 9 in Chicago. She will serve until June 2018.

2. Dr. Woods became an ASGE member in 1991 and a fellow in 2006.

3. She served on the ASGE Governing Board and the ASGE Foundation Board as well as several committees.

4. Dr. Woods is a past councilor of the ASGE Governing Board, a past vice president and a former president-elect.

5. She now practices out of Houston Methodist, but Dr. Woods previously had a solo private practice for 16 years.

6. Dr. Woods is a former full-time faculty member at Houston-based Baylor College. She trained many fellows in endoscopy.

7. Dr. Woods is a member of the FDA's Drug Administration Gastrointestinal and Urologic Devices Panel. She has served the panel in several capacities since 1993.

8. Her primary specialties include gastroenterology with a focus on endoscopic mucosal resection of esophageal and colonic lesions, advanced polypectomy and ablation of Barrett's esophagus.
