6 things to know about newly appointed AGA Institute Board Vice President Dr. Bishr Omary

Bishr Omary, MD, PhD, is joining the American Gastroenterological Association Institute's board as its vice president, effective in June 2018.

Dr. Omary will serve as the board president in 2020-2021.

Here are six things to know about Dr. Omary:

1. Dr. Omary specializes in GI biology and physiology.

2. Throughout his career, he has made several scientific contributions, most notably in the liver and pancreas biology and disease perspectives fields.

3. After earning a PhD from UC San Diego, he earned a medical degree from the University of Miami. Dr. Omary then completed a residency at UC Irvine before returning to UC San Diego for his fellowship.

4. He spent 19 years at Stanford (Calif.) University, serving as chief of the gastroenterology and hepatology division, before he transitioned to Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan to oversee its molecular and integrative physiology department.

5. Dr. Omary is a past Gastroenterology editor-in-chief.

6. He has served on several AGA committees, including education and training, nominating, research policy and publications.
