Laura Dyrda -

More than half — 53 percent — of gastroenterologists are employed at hospitals or other healthcare organizations, according to the Medscape Gastroenterologist Compensation Report 2018.

The trend reflects a national trend toward physician employment. Here are five key statistics about gastroenterologists.

1. While more gastroenterologists are working in hospitals and with organizations, self-employed gastroenterologists report higher compensation. Employed gastroenterologists reported $400,000 in annual compensation, compared to $424,000 for self-employed gastroenterologists.

2. Male gastroenterologists are more likely to be employed than female gastroenterologists; 55 percent of male gastroenterologists compared to 46 percent of female gastroenterologists are employed.

3. The most common benefits gastroenterologists receive include:

• Professional liability: 75 percent
• Health insurance: 72 percent
• Dental insurance: 57 percent
• Retirement plan with match: 57 percent

4. Around 43 percent of employed gastroenterologists are seeking promotions within their hospital or large group, which would mean added administrative or management responsibilities.

5. Female gastroenterologists are more likely to go for promotions than male gastroenterologists; 75 percent of female gastroenterologists report seeking promotions compared to 39 percent of male gastroenterologists.
