5 predictions on GI in 2018

Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic shared their thoughts with MedPage Today about what's in store for gastroenterology in 2018.

The overarching theme for 2018 will be to drive value and cost efficiency, said Cleveland Clinic's Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute Chairman Conor Delaney, MD, PhD. Dr. Delaney added that the industry will continue to focus on outcomes improvement, while also discussing colon cancer screening and endoscopy disinfection.

Here are five other predictions:

1. Gastroenterologists will participate in shared risk models with primary care physicians.

2. Payers will approve biologics and hepatitis C drug therapies but with reserve.

3. Dr. Delaney expects new models of specialty GI care will emerge with bundled payments.

4. Researchers will develop an endoscopy therapy for obesity and metabolic syndrome.

5. The recommended age for colon cancer screening will decrease.
