4 insights into new ASGE president Dr. John Vargo II

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy appointed John Vargo, II, MD, its new president at Digestive Disease Week 2019, May 18-21 in San Diego.

Four insights:

1. Dr. Vargo is a gastroenterologist at the Cleveland Clinic, where he also serves as the Digestive Disease & Surgery Institute’s director of enterprise endoscopy operations and leads the advanced endoscopy department.

2. He became an ASGE member in 1991 and a fellow in 2007. He served on the ASGE Governing Board as a councilor from 2010-13, as secretary-elect from 2014-15 and as secretary from 2015-18.

3. Dr. Vargo became president-elect in 2017, completing his term in 2018.

4. During his presidential tenure, Dr. Vargo intends to better engage ASGE’s new fellowship cohort and provide the “best possible membership value to this group.” He also created a new virtual advisory committee made up solely of GI fellows.
