4 insights into gastroenterologists' lifestyles & happiness

Medscape released its 2019 Physician Lifestyle & Happiness report offering crowdsourced insights into physicians' lifestyles and happiness.

Medscape surveyed 15,069 physicians across more than 29 specialties through an online survey. Physicians were required to practice medicine in the U.S.

What they found:

1. Fifty-one percent of gastroenterologists said they were happiest outside of work, the tenth lowest specialty. Rheumatologists (65 percent) were the happiest outside of work.

2. However, gastroenterologists had the eighth highest reported self-esteem at 63 percent. Plastic surgeons (73 percent) reported having the highest self-esteem.

3. Fifty percent of gastroenterologists said they had a "happy marriage," the eighth lowest specialty. Otolaryngologists (67 percent) reported having the happiest marriages.

4. Toyota (20 percent) was the most popular car brand physicians drive, followed by Honda (16 percent) and BMW (10 percent).
