3 top risk factors for failed fecal transplant

There is a bevy of evidence supporting fecal microbiota transplantations as treatment for refractory Clostridium difficile infection, but FMT is not always effective.

Here are three top risk factors for failed FMT in CDI patients, according to a Medpage Today report.

1. Being an inpatient while receiving FMT
2. Immunosuppression
3. Previous record of CDI-related hospitalization

Researchers from Indiana University Health based in Indianapolis presented data from a study of 345 CDI patients at the American College of Gastroenterology annual meeting in Honolulu. FMT failed in 23.7 percent of patients at 3 months follow-up, according to the repot.

The study authors concluded risk of FMT failure can be predicted before actual transplantation
