3 insights on AI in gastroenterology

Sushovan Guha, MD, a gastroenterologist at Phoenix-based Banner Digestive Diseases Institute, shared his insights on artificial intelligence in the gastroenterology field in an interview with Medscape.

Three things to know:

1. Dr. Guha said that AI technology and machine learning had helped the colonoscopy field progress in the last year and a half, but researchers are still working on how AI can help physicians treat diseases of the esophagus, such as Barrett's esophagus, associated with gastroesophageal reflux.

2 The barriers to adopting AI technology in clinical practice include such legal issues, as liability for errors and validation of algorithms, Dr. Guha said.

3. Dr. Guha said the core aspect of AI-assisted colonoscopy systems is taking high quality images of the colon. The computer then analyzes them, detecting polyps and determining their types.
