1st CME-accredited virtual reality course launched for GI surgeons — 4 insights

Gastrointestinal surgeons can stream a 360-degree virtual reality course in GI surgery thanks to a collaboration between Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai and streaming platform GIBLIB.

Here's what you should know:

1. The Essential GI Surgeries course offers 25 hours of narrated surgical procedures with multiple perspectives, including surgeon points-of-view. It is the first CME-accredited virtual reality content.

2. The content closely emulates operating room environments using 4K and 360-degree virtual reality. Course participants view procedures with a VR headset.

3. GIBLIB's camera equipment recorded procedures performed by Cedars-Sinai surgeons, including Mohan Mallipeddi, MD, and Ed Phillips, MD.

4. Healthcare providers can access the course by subscribing to GIBLIB's library, which features on-demand medical lectures and surgical videos.

"We are excited to bring Cedars-Sinai medicine virtually to any doctor at any medical facility," said Cedar-Sinai's Harry Sax, MD, surgery department executive vice chair. "With this technology, other medical professionals can learn our advanced techniques and procedures and ultimately, deliver excellent care to patients across the country."
