Madison, Ga.-based Morgan Medical Center has launched a new cardiology service line led by board-certified cardiologist John Layher, MD. The 25-bed critical access hospital, a level 4 trauma center serving Morgan County, will offer the service alongside physician assistant Jennifer Bowers and nurse practitioner Christina Ross.

The new service line covers preventive cardiology, coronary artery disease evaluation, heart failure management, valvular heart disease evaluation and arrhythmia care. It also includes advanced cardiac imaging — echocardiography, cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, nuclear cardiology and vascular ultrasound — along with device therapy such as pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation and cardiac resynchronization therapy.

“Our goal is to continually expand advanced care in Morgan County, so our community has access to top-tier medicine without having to travel to major cities,” said Ralph A. Castillo, CPA, CEO of Morgan Medical Center. “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Layher, a highly respected cardiologist, and his team to Morgan Medical Center.”

Dr. Layher earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., and finished his cardiology fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine. His approach emphasizes early detection, prevention and individualized treatment plans.

The addition of cardiology services extends Morgan Medical Center’s specialty offerings, part of a broader push to keep advanced care accessible to rural Georgia patients closer to home.
