Akron Children’s Hospital in Ohio is planning a nine-bed heart unit as part of its expanded pediatric intensive care unit.

The move will place all heart patients in one location, allowing for continuous, specialized care from a dedicated team, according to an Aug. 26 news release.

“This expertise extends from the bedside nursing team to the multidisciplinary staff and allows us to continue to grow as a center of excellence in caring for babies and children with congenital heart disease,” said Robert Stewart, MD, chief of cardiothoracic surgery, in the release.

The heart unit is part of a new 45-bed PICU, which also houses the emergency department and NICU.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
