From large fraud cases to notable retirements and performing new procedures, here are five cardiologists that made Becker’s headlines in the last two months.

1. The Kansas State Board of Healing Arts suspended the license of a Texas-based physician indicted in an alleged $89 million cardiovascular testing fraud scheme. The board issued a 90-day order of immediate suspension Sept. 29 for Jason Finkelstein, MD, who was licensed in Kansas through the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact in 2022 and renewed his license this summer.  Dr. Finkelstein was indicted in June on charges of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and wire fraud, as well as healthcare fraud.

2. Two cardiologists in Wichita Falls, Texas, are closing their practices and entered retirement in September. Shona Sudarshan, MD, and Sriram Sudarshan, MD, are retiring from practice at North Texas Cardiology Center. Their practices will close Jan. 1, 2027.

3. Tampa General Hospital Brooksville (Fla.) completed its first cardiothoracic surgical procedure Aug. 24. Benjamin Mackie, MD, Lucian Lozonschi, MD, Charan Mungara, MD, and Julie Lallanilla, RN, led the establishment of the cardiothoracic program at the facility.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
