Here are five cardiologists making Becker’s headlines in the last two weeks:
1. Colin Wright, MD, of Utica, N.Y.-based CNY Cardiology performed Oneida County’s first patent foramen ovale closure, a minimally invasive heart procedure that can reduce stroke risk.
2. Miami-based Nicklaus Children’s Hospital named David Kalfa, MD, PhD, chief of its section of cardiovascular surgery and co-director of the Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute. He will also be a professor at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in Westchester.
3. Juan Kurdi, MD, an interventional cardiologist who co-owned and co-operated a group medical practice in Lubbock, Texas, agreed to pay $1.2 million to resolve allegations that he violated the Controlled Substances Act.
4. Steve Lin, MD, an interventional cardiologist and heart failure specialist with Lexington, Ky.-based St. Joseph Medical Group—Cardiology, received the Innovation Award as part of the Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health Physician Enterprise Vision Awards.
5. Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research (DOR) and partners received a $5 million grant from the American Heart Association to study how artificial intelligence can improve cardiovascular disease screening and treatment. The multicenter clinical trial will be led by David Ouyang, MD, and it will explore the use of AI to analyze heart ultrasounds.
