Sioux Falls-based Avera Health Systems sees a two to four percent physician turnover rate compared to the national average of eight to ten percent. Avera targets physicians with a connection to the area and a desire to focus on patient relationships in less populous regions.
“I think that aspect of it is really different in a small town, really knowing the entire family, each individual situation, each patient is living in. It gives you another perspective on what’s going on. It’s not just treating diseases; it’s really treating people,” said Jon Engbers, MD, a second-year resident in Sioux Falls.
