Rare data on freestanding ASCs in California — 6 statistics

Data on California's physician-owned ASCs is difficult to come by after a legal decision removed reporting requirements over a decade ago. Here are six key findings on the supply, use, quality and finances of the state's ASCs from the California Health Care Almanac.

1. The report studied data and trends from 2005 to 2016.

2. California experienced a 26 percent increase in Medicare-approved ASCs in the 11-year period.

3. Despite a 45 percent increase in the number of operating rooms in these facilities from 2005 to 2016, California's number of freestanding ASC ORs per 100,000 people in 2016 was slightly lower than the average U.S. state.

4. Each facility performed around 2,500 surgeries on average.

5. Private insurance was the No. 1 payer among freestanding ASCs that reported data to Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. Medi-Cal accounted for about 33 percent of ASC encounters, compared to 41 percent represented by private insurance.

6. California's performance on the first reported set of quality measures for ASCs was similar to the national average.
