How ASC numbers, volumes & reimbursements changed from 2012-17

The number of ASCs in the U.S. increased from 5,216 in 2012 to 5,603 in 2017, according to Global Healthcare Advisors, an investment bank focused on healthcare mergers and acquisitions.

Four insights on ASC growth rates from GHA's latest ASC market brief:

1. Number of ASCs
Annual average from 2012-16: 1 percent
2017: 2.4 percent

2. Number of treated fee-for-service beneficiaries
Annual average from 2012-16: 1 percent
2017: 0.4 percent

3. Volume of services per FFS beneficiary
Annual average from 2012-16: 1.2 percent
2017: 1.7 percent

4. Medicare payments for ASC services per FFS beneficiary
Annual average from 2012-16: 3.5 percent
2017: 7.7 percent
