Hospital visits after discharge from ASC — which specialty has the highest percentage?

Cardiology reported the highest share of ASC cases with hospital visits within 7 days of discharge in 2014 and 2016, according to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission's 2018 report to Congress.

Urology had the second highest percentage of cases with subsequent hospital visits, while ophthalmology had the lowest in both years.

"Subsequent hospital visits" includes inpatient admissions, observation services and emergency department visits, and excludes cases related to trauma or mental health services. Data is from a MedPAC analysis of Medicare physician, hospital outpatient and hospital inpatient claims.
