Americans' lack of eye health knowledge puts them at risk — 5 survey insights

A lack of eye health knowledge is putting Americans at risk for vision loss, according to findings from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

The Harris Poll, on behalf of AAO, surveyed more than 3,500 U.S. citizens about eye health.

Here's what they found:

1. Eighty-one percent of adults said they were knowledgeable about eye health.

2. Only 19 percent of adults correctly identified the three main causes of blindness in the U.S.

3. Forty-seven percent of adults were aware that blindness did not affect all people equally.

4. Thirty-seven percent of adults said they knew that people did not always experience symptoms when losing their vision.

5. Forty-seven percent of adults said they were aware that the brain can make it difficult to know if someone is losing their vision.
