29 statistics to know on physicians performing procedures, investing in ASCs

Here are 29 statistics on physician investment and procedure case volume in ASCs collected from a number of sources in the industry:

The top 10 physicians at ASCs take on about 73 percent of cases on average, according to VMG Health's 2018 Multi-Specialty ASC Benchmarking Study. The study includes an analysis of more than 275 licensed freestanding ASC covering more than 1.3 million cases.

While most companies prefer six to 10 active physician owners at single-specialty ASCs, one-third of companies said there should be 11 to 15 at multispecialty centers, according to HealthCare Appraisers' 2018 ASC Valuation Survey. Here are statistics on the number of active physician owners preferred for single specialty centers and multispecialty centers. Data was collected from 15 respondents representing 700-plus surgery centers in the U.S.

17. Six to 10: 67 percent
18. 11 to 15: 13 percent

21. 16 to 20: 27 percent

The surgeon's technical skill is disputed in about one-third of ASC-based claims, according to medical professional liability insurer Coverys.
