Here are 26 statistics on ASC size and ownership from a variety of sources across the industry.

VMG Health's 2018 Multi-Specialty ASC Benchmarking Study detailed the median square footage of ASCs per region, based on an analysis of more than 275 licensed freestanding ASCs.

HealthCare Appraisers' 2018 ASC Valuation Survey which offered insights into ASC valuation and ownership trends. HealthCare Appraisers surveyed 15 respondents that represented 700-plus surgery centers throughout the country. Below, the percentage of ASCs with up to 51 owners are represented.

8. Fewer than 10 owners: 53 percent
9. 11 to 20: 13 percent
10. 21 to 30: 0 percent
11. 31 to 40: 0 percent
12. 41 to 50: 7 percent
13. More than 51: 27 percent

14. Fewer than 10: 43 percent
15. 11 to 20: 29 percent

While most companies prefer six to 10 active physician owners at single-specialty ASCs, one-third of companies said there should be 11 to 15 at multispecialty centers, according to HealthCare Appraisers' 2018 ASC Valuation Survey. Here are statistics on how many physician owners ASCs have:

Single-specialty
20. One to five owners: 20 percent
21. Six to 10: 67 percent
22. 11 to 15: 13 percent

Multispecialty
23. Six to 10 owners: 27 percent
24. 11 to 15: 33 percent
25. 16 to 20: 27 percent
26. 21 or more: 13 percent
