HealthCare Appraisers' 2018 ASC Valuation Survey provided insight into the ASC market and surgery center characteristics.

Fifteen respondents representing over 700 surgery centers in the U.S. participated in HealthCare Appraisers' survey.

The key statistics to know:

Time spent finding ASC physician investors to closing a sale

1. Less than three months: 27 percent
2. Three to six months: 33 percent
3. Six months to one year: 40 percent

Most common buyers of controlling interest

4. Single outside third party: 57 percent
5. Single existing owner: 7 percent
6. Multiple outside parties: 0 percent
7. Multiple existing owners: 0 percent
8. Hospital or health system: 36 percent

Marketplace acquisitions observed

9. No change from previous year: 27 percent
10. Decreasing: 33 percent
11. Increasing: 40 percent

Acquisition competition observed

12. No change from previous year: 47 percent
13. Decreasing: 13 percent
14. Increasing: 40 percent

Most ASCs are physician-owned, according to the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association's 2017 Salary & Benefits Survey.

A breakdown of ASC ownership:

15. Physician: 64 percent
16. Physician-hospital: 24 percent
17. Physician-corporate: 4 percent
18. Corporate: 4 percent
19. Hospital: 3 percent
20. Physician-hospital-corporate: 1 percent
