11 states with below-average physician numbers & more: 4 workforce insights

A new report from the Association of American Medical Colleges revealed that nearly one-third of all physicians were 60 or older at the end of 2018, RevCycleIntelligence reports.

Three additional takeaways from the report:

1. The median number of active physicians per 100,000 population increased from 239.6 physicians in 2008 to 263.3 physicians in 2018.

2. These states had fewer active physicians than the median number: Mississippi, Idaho, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Alabama, Iowa, Texas and Kansas.

3. From 2008 to 2018, the median number of active general surgeons per 100,000 population decreased by 0.3 from 8.0 per 100,000 to 7.7 per 100,000.
