New research from the University of Chicago is working to create an accurate picture of physician earnings. 

Noncompete clauses affect between 37 and 45 percent of physicians, according to a report from the American Medical Association, and often can limit career growth and restrict physicians' ability to provide care in economically or socially marginalized communities. 

The average physician earns $243,400 in wages and $350,000 in total individual income, according to recent data from the University of Chicago that aims to create an accurate picture of physician earnings. 

UnitedHealth Group's Optum, parent company of ASC chain SCA Health, has made massive leadership moves in the last year. 

As physicians increasingly migrate to employed models, some practices are focusing on prioritizing physician leadership. 

While the ASC industry is largely fragmented, five major groups control a solid chunk of the market share, according to the VMG Health's "2023 Healthcare M&A Report."
