West Virginia Hospital temporarily halts elective surgeries at campus, surgery center — 4 insights

Cabell Huntington (W. Va.) Hospital has suspended all elective surgeries at its main operating room, labor and delivery bay, endoscopy suites and its surgery center after discovering granular particles on a small number of sterile trays, the Herald Dispatch reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. The hospital discovered the contaminated trays late last week. Surgeries will be suspended at all locations at least through Feb. 6.

2. Procedures at the hospital's main operating room have been suspended since Jan. 30.

3. The hospital's Vice President for Strategic Marketing, Planning and Business Development Lisa Chamberlain said none of the contaminated trays were used in procedures.

4. The hospital is going to ensure all residual sediment is cleared from its system before resuming procedures.
