The 5 specialties with lowest net worth

Orthopedists on average have the highest net worth, according to Medscape’s Physician Wealth and Debt report, with 15 percent reporting a net worth exceeding $5 million. On the other end of the spectrum, here are the five specialty groups with the highest percent of physicians report a net worth under $500,000.

1. Family Medicine: 44 percent (average annual compensation: $209,000)
2. Neurology: 43 percent (average annual compensation: $280,000)
3. Internal medicine: 43 percent (average annual compensation: $249,000)
4. Pediatrics: 42 percent (average annual compensation: $202,000)
5. Endocrinology: 39 percent (average annual compensation: $220,000)

These specialty areas are also among the least likely to report a net worth at $2 million or more. Twelve percent of family medicine physicians, 14 percent of pediatricians, 15 percent of internal medicine, 16 percent of endocrinologists and 17 percent of neurology specialists report a net worth at $2 million or more.
