The 5 books physicians (and their families) want this Christmas

Medscape asked its advisors and contributors what books they'd like to recommend this holiday season.

Here are five highlights:

Non-fiction
1. Medscape's Editor-In-Chief Eric Topol, MD, recommended, "The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine," which tells the story of how Joseph Lister changed healthcare's perception, while standing behind evidence-based practices.

2. Medscape's gastroenterology advisor David Johnson, MD, recommended, "The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living," which offers readers quotes from historical figures supplemented by discussion with the book's authors.

Fiction
3. Medscape's medical students advisor Sara Cohen, MD, recommended "The Wide Circumference of Love: A Novel," which is "a beautifully written story about a women dealing with her husband, a former judge, who contracts early-onset Alzheimer disease."

4. Medscape's OB/GYN and women's health advisor Andrew Kaunitz, MD, recommended, "A Nest of Vipers," which is a continuation of the Andrea Camilleri's series featuring Sicilian inspector Salvo Montalbano. Dr. Kaunitz said, "I have never visited Sicily, but reading this series transports one to this region, allowing an appreciation of not only its good-humored inhabitants and fabulous cuisine ... but also its pervasive smoking and endemic corruption."

Children's books
5. Medscape's medical students advisor Sarah Averill, MD, recommended, "The Fox and the Star," for children this Christmas. The book follows a relationship between a fox and the star which guides the fox through darkness. Dr. Averill said it was her "favorite children's book of the year."
