St. Mary opens new surgery department — 5 highlights

St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, Ind., is opening a new surgery department, according to The Times of Northwest Indiana.

Here are five highlights:

1. The unit is roughly $25 million and is the second and largest phase of a recent $40 million expansion.

2. St. Mary CEO, Janice Ryba, said the unit enhances the Hobart hospital's current line of surgical services while leaving room for future growth.

3. The final phase of the 32,000 square foot project will remodel the old surgery department into a family lounge, physician consultation rooms and office space.

4. The new pavilion features 12 large surgical suites, one minor procedure room and two rooms each for urology and endoscopy, and includes robotic and laser surgical technology. It also has an integrated video system that allows surgeons to take video and photos of procedures and share them electronically with consulting physicians.

5. The new unit will have its grand opening next week.
