Shriners Hospitals For Children — Tampa converting to outpatient-only facility: 4 insights

Shriners Hospitals For Children — Tampa (Fla.) will transition away from its inpatient model to an entirely outpatient, same-day model in August, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

What you should know:

1. Tampa will be the fifth Shriners hospital that is outpatient only. Shriners operates 20 hospitals across the U.S.

2. Shriners spokesman Mel Bower said the health system has seen fewer patients who need complex, inpatient care in recent years.

3. Some Shriners employees will lose their jobs because of the change, but Shriners has yet to designate how many.

4. Shriners will refer patients in need of more complex procedures to other facilities, or will transfer patients to Shriners' Shreveport, La., and Greensville, S.C., facilities.
