'Sensationalized' ASC article rebuked once again — 3 insights

Axo Bill penned a column in response to the Kaiser Health News and USA Today story on outpatient surgery center safety, criticizing the article as "misleading, misplaced and inappropriate."

Here's what you should know.

1. The post argued while the reporters did review thousands of Medicare and postmortem records, the reviewed records represented only a small portion of the number of patients treated at surgery centers.

2. The post cited a lack of evidence that would answer "how patients would have fared had they been in a hospital, as opposed to a surgery center."

3. With healthcare costs rocketing, the company said the move to surgery centers is an essential one. Surgery centers allow for procedures to be performed at a decreased cost, while still upholding high-quality outcomes rates. The post derided the article's one-sidedness and called for an article that comprehensively "gives the pros and cons of alternative methods, as well as the benefits and burdens thereof."
