Rural patients pay more for healthcare, study says: 4 details

A new report from the Urban Institute found patients living in rural areas pay more for healthcare through Obamacare coverage than those living in urban areas.

Here are the key details to know:

1. The costs for healthcare in rural areas are 5 to 10 percent higher than healthcare in urban areas.

2. Fewer insurance companies are offering coverage in rural areas, resulting in fewer choices and higher competition.

3. For patients living in rural areas, the cost of a plan can be hundreds of dollars more expensive than they would be in urban areas. For example, patients in rural Tennessee and Nebraska pay $187 more for a plan than those in urban areas. In Nebraska, it's a $130 difference, and $127 in Florida.

4. For plans subsidized by taxpayers, some low and middle income rural patients won't have to pay the increased cost out of pocket.
