Texas Health Surgery Center Cleburne partnered with Cleburne High School gives high school students interested in medical careers real-world experience, the Cleburne Times-Review reports.
What you should know:
1. The students first visited the surgery center in 2018, which led to center administrators developing a partnership with teachers to host the students for a three week, twice-a-week program.
2. The students get a chance to observe several aspects of patient care including check-in, preoperative prep, surgery, postoperative recovery and dismissal.
3. Health Sciences Teacher Jodi Thomas said, "The biggest thing I hear from our kids is the way they are treated by the staff at the surgery center. They are so receptive to them being there and really want to provide them with every aspect of what is taking place there."
4. Surgery Center Administrator Melissa Dansby said the center is attempting to provide as much hands-on learning as possible. She added, "We wanted to do it right. We wanted to make it meaningful for students in their time with us. … We try to let them apply what they are learning at the high school — and teach them a little bit more."
