Physician payment, administrative contracts & quality initiatives: 6 notes on physician pay

MD Ranger released results from its national compensation survey examining physician payment rates.

The results include 250 benchmarks reported for call coverage, medical direction, medical staff leadership and more. The benchmarks came from more than 24,000 contracts from hospitals, medical groups and long term care providers, among others.

Here are six key takeaways form the report:

1. Total hospital payments for direction and administrative service payment is up 25 percent this year over the 2014 to 2015 year. At the same time, call coverage is flat.

2. Per diem rates for call coverage grew an average of 5 percent in the last year.

3. The annual cost of administrative contracts is up 7 percent due to increased hours worked; the hourly rate for administrative services is flat.

4. Some specialists experienced growth; cardiologists saw a growth in the scope and cost of related coverage. Their direction contracts also increased.

5. Infectious disease-related services are evolving with a variety of antibiotic stewardship, directorships and coverage agreements.

6. The changes in the report are related to the growing quality, outcomes and pay-for-performance-related initiatives. Regulatory and accreditation organizations are driving the trend toward value-based care.
