Physician groups seek help from Congress — 5 points

More than 100 national and state medical societies and physician organizations are seeking help from Congress to change the newly released Stage 3 regulations of Meaningful Use, according to MedCity News.

Here are five points:

1. The physician groups are frustrated with what they called "widespread failure" of Meaningful Use Stage 2.

2. The American Medical Association led the effort to appeal to Congress. The effort consists of all state medical societies, except South Carolina's, and dozens of specialty societies.

3. In the letter, the medical groups critiqued the Obama administration for maintaining "fundamental flaws" in Stage 2. The groups said Stage 2 is more about documentation than promoting interoperability of electronic health records.

4. The 111 groups wrote a pair of letters sent to the House and Senate leaders.

5. The groups wrote, "Relying so heavily on the failed construct of Stage 2 will only guarantee continued failure in Stage 3. We believe that the success of the program hinges on a laser-like focus on promoting interoperability and allowing innovation to flourish as vendors respond to the demands of physicians and hospitals rather than the current system where vendors must meet the ill-informed check-the-box requirements of the current program."
