1. Compared to 2015, more than 55 percent of surveyed organization reported increasing the amount of patient data they shared in 2016.
2. Approximately 60 percent said they do not have complete confidence in sharing patient data due to patient anonymity concerns.
3. Many organizations reported using the Safe Harbor method to protect patient information. This method entails organizations removing or changing 18 data elements in a patient’s health information to ensure the patient is anonymous.
4. Real Health Data reports the Safe Harbor method will likely be ineffective moving forward as organization link data sets with other data sets.
5. Many of the respondents reported using multiple approaches to protect patient data, which the report notes could put these organizations at an increased risk of exposing patient identities.
