Parkway Surgery Center's Kirsten Anderson: 'The best way to grow is to make changes'

Laura Dyrda -

Kirsten Anderson is the administrator of Parkway Surgery Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Here, Ms. Anderson discusses how new technology and data analytics has improved operations and care delivery at her ASC.

Question: What initiative are you most proud of at your ASC over the past 12 to 18 months?

Kirsten Anderson: The initiatives I am most proud of in the past year-plus include successful new practice management and EHR implementation, facility upgrades and renovations, improvements in staff retention

Q: How do you make sure your team is motivated for continued success and growth of the ASC?

KA: The best way to grow is to make changes. We have found that by including staff and getting their input and insight on potential changes, they become engaged in the processes and committed to the success.

Q: What are your best practices for meeting revenue cycle benchmarks?

KA: We have moved to automating processes such as real-time eligibility and benefits. This has also helped improve time of service collections.

Q: Where do you see your center growing in the second half of 2019 and beyond?

KA: With a new EHR implementation, we have implemented a detailed case costing module. With this information, we hope to make better informed decisions on cases and specialties. It's all about working smarter not harder. Data analytics is becoming very important in the ASC environment which for the large part, is still dedicated to manual process and paper charting. We have found that having this information at our disposal, helps us with tracking metrics and improving our quality.
