Orthopedic practice suing Allscripts after ransomware attack knocks out EHR access — 3 insights

Boynton Beach, Fla.-based Surfside Non-Surgical Orthopedics filed a class action lawsuit against Allscripts after a ransomware attack limited the practice's access to Allscripts' products for a week.

Here's what you should know:

1. The practice alleges Allscripts suffered a ransomware attack Jan. 18, which knocked out its access to patient records and the ability to electronically prescribe medications. Lacking those resources, the practice had to cancel appointments resulting in monetary damages, according to the case filing.

2. The class action suit is alleging five separate counts against Allscripts.

3. The class action plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial to determine an appropriate cash settlement.
