MU went 'off course,' ACP members say — 5 highlights

American College of Physicians members Peter Basch, MD, and Thomson Kuhn, said the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act enables the CMS to "reconceptualize" Meaningful Use, according to FierceEMR.

Here are five highlights:

1. MACRA will transition many physicians out of the MU program and into a new Merit Based Incentive Payment System.

2. Dr. Basch and Mr. Kuhn claim MU failed to recognize that the value of electronic health records differs for physicians across specialties and healthcare settings.

3. The ACP members claimed Stage 3 should not be delayed as that would result in the existing Stage 2 being integrated into MIPS.

4. Dr. Basch and Mr. Kun advise that MU within MACRA should:
•    Get rid of functional-use measure threshold
•    Push forward meaningful and practical interoperability

5. Dr. Basch serves as ACP's chair of the medical informatics committee and Mr. Kuhn is ACP's senior system architect.
