Mayo Clinic shows overlapping surgeries can work at a high volume referral center: 5 key notes

A new study published in the Annals of Surgery examines overlapping surgeries at a high volume referral center.

The researchers examined overlapping surgeries at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The analysis included surgeries from January 2013 to September 2015 that were logged in the University HealthSystem Consortium. There were 10,765 overlapping surgical cases; the study authors matched 10,614 of those cases with 16,111 nonoverlapping cases.

The researchers found:

1. Inpatient mortality was greater for the nonoverlapping cases.

2. Length of stay was similar between the overlapping and nonoverlapping cases.

3. The confirmatory analysis showed 93.7 percent of the overlapping surgeries matched to 5,637 of the nonoverlapping procedures.

4. The 30-day mortality was not clinically different between the two groups.

5. The researchers concluded their findings supported the safety of overlapping surgical procedures; however, they contained their findings to the Mayo Clinic and warned the same may not be true at other centers.
