Malpractice payout & liability insurance in the U.S. — 20 state rankings

Wisconsin's malpractice award payout per capita is the lowest in the U.S., according to a new WalletHub ranking.

WalletHub compared the 50 states and Washington, D.C., across two dimensions: "opportunity and competition” and "medical environment." The rankings were based on analysis of 18 metrics, which were each graded on a 100-point scale.

Lowest malpractice award payout amount per capita:

1. Wisconsin
2. South Dakota
3. Vermont
4. Minnesota
5. North Carolina

Highest malpractice award payout amount per capita:

47. Pennsylvania
48. Connecticut
49. New Jersey
50. Rhode Island (tie)
50. New York (tie)

Least expensive annual malpractice liability insurance:

1. Nebraska
2. South Dakota
3. Wisconsin
4. Minnesota
5. Kansas

Most expensive annual malpractice liability insurance:

46. West Virginia
47. Washington, D.C.
48. Michigan
49. Illinois
50. New York
