Indiana ASCs to prepare for active shooter threat with tabletop exercise — 5 details

ASCs from across Indiana will participate in an active shooter threat tabletop exercise Oct. 5 at the Indiana Federation of Ambulatory Surgical Centers' Fall Conference and Tradeshow in Carmel, Ind.

1. The exercise will consist of two modules for handling an active shooter threat within an ASC. The first module will cover initial notification of an active shooter and response to the threat. The second module will entail information sharing and recovery.

2. The exercise is expected to last about two hours, with instruction beforehand and a debriefing afterword.

3. ASCs will break into groups during the exercise to work together and share best practices.

4. Vantage Point Consulting's President Troy Jester and Senior Consultant Joyce Fogler, RN, will lead the tabletop exercise, addressing the role of ASC management and staff during an active shooter scenario.

5. Participation will help ASCs maintain compliance with a final rule CMS published in 2016. According to the ASC Association, CMS requires facilities to participate in two emergency preparedness exercises a year: a community-based or facility-based drill, and a facility based-drill or tabletop exercise.
